Our Community, Our Voice: Disaster preparedness in Wyndham and Melton

Announcements

Jun 2, 2025

We are excited to be expanding our work to Wyndham and Melton in 2025. Our program will support migrant and refugee communities to prepare for future climate disasters and build long-term resilience, drawing on the lessons from our Maribyrnong work.

Extreme weather events—like floods, fires, and heatwaves—are becoming more frequent and intense. Research shows that violence against women rises after disasters, with migrant and refugee women often most at risk. In fact, a recent UN Study shows that for every 1°C rise in average temperature, violence against women and families increases by 4.7%.

As a women’s health service, GenWest supports women who are disproportionately impacted by climate change, emergency, and disaster situations in urban settings. We build women’s leadership, strengthen community connections, and advocate for fair, inclusive policies.
